Short and Sweet!

I am OFFICIALLY a college graduate!!! Also, I just found out today I get to stay at my school AND I get to stay in 2nd grade. I love the people I work with and the age group I work with so I was quite sad when I thought I was going to have to move grades! Life is FANTASTIC!

My little poets!

Today the literacy specialist came in to teach my kids how to write poems. I love when she comes in because I just get to watch and learn fun, new lessons that I can use to teach next year. They had to write a poem with 3 lines and the lines had 5 syllables, 7 syllables, and then 5 syllables. Here are some of the poems that made me laugh! (DISCLAIMER: I swear my kids can write very well...I have lots of awesome poems to prove it. These are more simple...)

This is Marae's poem...Brandon has a crush on Marae (I know this because he wanted a phone pass so that he could walk home. When I asked why he wanted to walk home Ethan screamed to the whole class it was because he wanted to walk home with Marae. Brandon just smiled and didn't even try to deny it! My brave little man!) so I am sure his heart was beating fast when he heard Marae read this poem to me.

Brandon is awesome.
I love how he is so nice.
Do you think he's nice?

Next is McKay's poem. When the literacy specialist was walking around and reading the poems she made me go over and read his. If she only knew this is often the topic of conversation in our classroom!

Teachers like to teach.
Miss Phillips has a boyfriend.
I like my teacher.

Then their is Bennie's poem. Yes my hair is still bright pink and I am the talk of the whole school. My class is enjoying the fact that their teacher is the one who has pink hair. I appreciated the extra very in the second line. I don't know why only 7 and 8 year olds are the ones who realize how cool I am. :P

Miss Phillips is nice.
She is very very cool.
She got her hair pink.

Now for Holden's poem. Kid you not, it is only in the last month or two that my kids have become obsessed with each other and everyone has a crush on each other. It's like they just realized that the opposite sex exists!! He likes recess but he LOVES to chase girls! Does he love to chase girls or does he just love girls?

I like recess lots.
I like recess very much.
I love to chase girls.

I wonder what the literacy specialist thinks I teach my kids because you certainly cannot tell from these poems!!!!

Spring..here we come!

Yesterday I went to the Hari Krishna Temple for the Festival of Colors! It was my second year going and I will definitely go another! There were a lot more people there this year which meant a lot more chalk to get in the eyes, ears, mouth, and nose! They are celebrating spring so you throw a bunch of colorful chalk at each other! I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed but have utterly failed to get all of the pink out of my hair. My kids tomorrow will have a field day! They are not allowed to dye their hair so I am not sure how fair they will think it is that I am showing up to class with pink hair! I can’t wait for little Cayden’s sarcastic comment about it in the morning!

Is it June yet?!

I bought my ticket to Hawaii last night!! I am going to Florida for 3 or 4 weeks starting June 2nd. Then I am coming back to Utah to meet up with my friend Dre so that we can drive to Cali and stay there for a couple of days! Then we are leaving from Los Angeles to fly to Hawaii! I am going to be there staying with some friends from June 29th to July 8th! Seriously, I am stoked and can't wait for June to get here!

Open mouth...insert foot!

I have a tendency to not think before I speak. This gets me in trouble and embarrassed often. Today our home teachers were over and we were just chit chatting for a while. We asked one of them how long he has been home from his mission which got him feeling old because he has been home for 2 years...This is how the conversation went after that question was asked.

Home teacher: I've been home for a year...almost 2 years actually. Wow.

Me: Don't feel bad...people ask me whether I have been on a mission all the time.

Everyone in the room chuckles a bit but they don't understand why that is significant.

Then I look to Melissa..."You know...don't you get asked that because you are older and still single."

Melissa: Oh yeah, I know what you mean.

Then I look to Laura and apparently she has never been asked that sooooo I say, "Well apparently Laura is too pretty to be asked that and I am ugly enough for people to think I should go on a mission and not wait around to get married."

Shauntae: HEYYYY!!!

Me: OOPS!!! (in head...realizing Shauntae has gone on a mission!)

Yeah so I laughed for about 5 minutes after that and hid my face while the redness went down from embarrassment.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

I just got done with my third and final night of parent/teacher conferences for the year! Next term is the end and we just get to send report cards home! It was a long day and I am glad it is done. The boyfriend thing came up in only three of the conferences so I was happy about that. Luckily none of my parents thought it was a big deal that their kids were meddling in my love life. Marae's mom is one of the parents who mentioned it. She told me Marae is really worried about the fact that I don't have a boyfriend. She said she was trying to help me by getting her uncle to date me. Marae is cute and it doesn't surprise me she is worried about it. Actually, she is the girl in the class that all the boys have a crush on and want to confess their love to so I do not think that she will ever have a problem getting a boyfriend! HAHA. The boys actually dare each other to go over and give Marae a hug. Then Marae comes to me and tells me the boys are acting weird and she wants them to stop!

I have a little boy named McKay in my class and he is very quiet but his quietness fools you because he is being bad you just don't realize it cause he is so quiet about it. I don't really want to say bad he just isn't always on task...After everyone left the other day he stayed back and asked me to talk to Maddy because he told Maddy a secret and he insists that secret is really embarrassing so he doesn't want anyone to know it. I am pretty sure the secret is that he is in love with one of my girls. :)

Since we stayed for conferences until 9 tonight we don't have students tomorrow and just get to work all day long on stuff for our classroom. This also means we get to sleep in so I don't plan on going into work until 9:30ish! I cannot wait! We usually play a lot of the day and take an extra LONG lunch!

Me...a blogger? WHAT?!

SO I never thought I would be a blogger but I keep reading funny stories of all the things that happen to people and it makes me want my own blog. The only problem is my life isn't as funny as everyone else's so in the end this blog might be proof to how boring I am.
Right now I am teaching 2nd grade and loving it. I have 24 students. They are all so unique and pretty much make me smile and laugh everyday. The recent huge laugh started a couple of weeks ago. My little comedian, Cayden, came into class early one day and saw me on my phone. He quickly jumped to the conclusion that I was texting my boyfriend and told everyone else in the class as they came in. There was much commotion that morning. I tried my best that day to convince the class that I do not have a boyfriend but they simply would not believe me. I started to ignore it to see if that would work but it only made it worse. Now every time there is a spare minute Holden says, "Miss Phillips, maybe it is time to talk about your boyfriend." I have been handling the small talk about my nonexistent boyfriend just fine and then one of the teachers across the hall that I am very good friends with came in the other day to talk to me about something. The class told Cassie, the teacher across the hall, that I had a boyfriend and playing around she said "I know, and he is soooo cute." This was HORRIBLE because there were explosive screams from all 24 of my students! Later that day Cassie sent a present from my "boyfriend" into my classroom and also sent two of the other teachers on my team in to talk about how cute my boyfriend is. NOW there is no convincing my kids that there is no boyfriend and they will not stop talking about it. They tell EVERYONE that comes into the classroom. One of these days I swear the principal is going to come in and not be so impressed with what my students are learning about! Parent teacher conferences are coming up and I am afraid to have to answer questions about why the kids are involved in my love life. One of my students offered to let me date her uncle just in case I really don't have a boyfriend. Oh the funny things kids do!!!
